BASEBALL NORTHWEST’S NEW 13U AND 14U TOURNAMENTS
Baseball Northwest is expanding its program into the youth leagues with new 13u and 14u summer tournaments for 2011. The new tournaments will be held at the new Borst Parks Sports Complex in Centralia, WA. This new complex is the largest baseball facility in the northwest with 6 fields within walking distance.
Every year BBNW will crown a true northwest team champion in the 13u and 14u age groups. These new 16 team tournaments will include the top teams from the five northwest states as invited by Baseball Northwest. It will be named the Northwest Tournament of Champions. The 14u event will be July 14th-17th and the 13u event will be July 21st-24th. Invitations for these events have begun to be sent out and will continue throughout the spring as BBNW “scout” the top teams for invitation. Teams can also secure spots in the Tournament of Championships by finishing 1st or 2nd in the Baseball Northwest July 1-4 “open” tournament also at Borst Park. Registration forms and more information can be obtained by emailing Jeff McKay at mckay@baseballnorthwest.com.

The Kansas City Royals will be the new major league team to select the northwest Area Code team for 2011. Area scout Scott Ramsey will be in charge. They will have a one day “invite only” workout with around 50 players in late June to select the team. I will be helping him with those selections. The Royals will do a good job for the players this year unlike some team’s effort from the past. Scott will also attend some Baseball Northwest tryout camps and Prospect Evaluations camps leading up to the tryout.
For the record, University of Oregon left offensive tackle Bo Thran is believed to be the first Baseball Northwest alumni to play in the college football national title game. He is likely the biggest alumni also at 6’5” and 286 lbs.
Speaking of college football—have to mention the successful year of Univ. of Washington quarterback Jake Locker—one of the all-time favorite Baseball Northwest alumni in terms of “good kid” and class act playing in the 2006 Northwest Championships. Good luck in the NFL Jake.
Two more alumni made pre-season college All-American teams. Collegiate Baseball named RHP Chris Dennis from the Univ. of Portland to their second team, and LHP Mitchell Lambson of Arizona State to their 3rd team.
Baseball America’s top 100 2011 junior college prospect list included four e-Baseball Northwest players—Jeff Ames, right handed pitcher from Lower Columbia CC at #10, right handed pitcher Adrian Sampson from Bellevue CC at #45, right handed pitcher Cody Hebner from Green River CC at #92 and outfielder Tym Pearson from Lane CC at #99.
Good to see Boston Red Sox LHP and Baseball Northwest alumni Jon Lester from Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma finish fourth in last season’s American League Cy Young Award voting. His recovery from cancer is a remarkable story. He is the second alum to receive votes for a CY Young Award. Of course, alum Tim Lincecum has won the award twice. Both pitchers pitched in the Northwest Championship Tournament.
