Sixty five Northwest players including 40 Baseball Northwest alumni were drafted in the 2011 Major League First-Year Player Draft.  The list includes players who played college and high school baseball in the northwest and players who played high school baseball in the northwest but went to college out of the northwest. The Division 1 college breakdown is: 8 from Oregon State University, 8 from University of Oregon, 5 from Washington State University, 4 from Gonzaga, 1 from University of Portland, and none from University of Washington. The high school players by state were:  12 from Washington, 3 from Oregon, 2 from Montana, and 1 from Wyoming and Idaho each.

Two Baseball Northwest alumni were selected on the first day of the major league first year player draft. Right handed pitcher Jeff Ames of Lower Columbia Community College was selected #42 and left-handed pitcher Blake Snell of Shorewood HS was selected #52. Both were drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays and join outfielder Brandon Nimmo of Cheyene, WY as the other northwest player taken during the first round and supplemental picks. Ames is a former no. 2 ranked Baseball Northwest player in 2009 before attending Lower Columbia, is a former USA Baseball 16u National Tournament team member, attended three Prospect Evaluation Camps, three Northwest Championship Tournaments, and was a Arizona Fall Classic participant for Baseball Northwest. Snell is also a USA 16u National Tournament Team member, attended three Evaluation Camps and Northwest Championships as well as a two year Arizona Fall Classic Baseball Northwest member. Blake is the current 3rd ranked northwest class of 2011 prospect by Baseball Northwest behind Nimmo at #2 and Porter Clayton at #1, who pitched at the University of Oregon this season.

Baseball Northwest is expanding its program into the youth leagues with new 13u and 14u summer tournaments for 2011. The new tournaments will be held at the new Borst Parks Sports Complex in Centralia, WA. This new complex is the largest baseball facility in the northwest with 6 fields within walking distance.

Every year BBNW will crown a true northwest team champion in the 13u and 14u age groups. These new 16 team tournaments will include the top teams from the five northwest states as invited by Baseball Northwest. It will be named the Northwest Tournament of Champions. The 14u event will be July 14th-17th and the 13u event will be July 21st-24th. Invitations for these events have begun to be sent out and will continue throughout the spring as BBNW “scout” the top teams for invitation. Teams can also secure spots in the Tournament of Championships by finishing 1st or 2nd in the Baseball Northwest July 1-4 “open” tournament also at Borst Park. Registration forms and more information can be obtained by emailing Jeff McKay at

Division 1 college players should dominate the Northwest 2011 Major League Rule 5 draft. Below is an early season look at the players who have drawn the most interest to date or the ones the scouts will be going to see first. Baseball Northwest will provide updates throughout the spring on how the draft is shaping up and include reports on all those players expected to be drafted. This early season look includes projected rounds, the order inside the rounds does not necessarily indicate the projected order in that round.  The “signability” of high school players has a huge impact on where those players are selected in the draft. The list also includes 25 BBNW alumni indicated with a *.

Major League Baseball's winter Rule 5 draft contained two Baseball Northwest alumni. Changing teams were RHP Mason Tobin who went from the Angels to the Cubs, and RHP Daniel Turpen from Boston to the Yankees. Tobin signed out of Everett CC and Turpen out of Oregon State. Also from the Northwest was LHP Joe Patterson from OSU was also drafted out of the Giants organization to Arizona.

Baseball America's pre-season class of 2011 drafted eligible college player lists includes contains six northwest college players including a Baseball Northwest alumni in right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio at #60 from Oregon State. Also on the list is from Univ. of Oregon is left-handed pitcher Tyler Anderson at #16, and right-handed pitcher Scott McGough at #47, OSU catcher Andrew Susac at #23, Washington State left-handed pitcher Adam Conley at #29, and Gonzaga's left-handed pitcher Ryan Carpenter.

The Kansas City Royals will be the new major league team to select the northwest Area Code team for 2011.  Area scout Scott Ramsey will be in charge. They will have a one day “invite only” workout with around 50 players in late June to select the team. I will be helping him with those selections. The Royals will do a good job for the players this year unlike some team’s effort from the past. Scott will also attend some Baseball Northwest tryout camps and Prospect Evaluations camps leading up to the tryout.

For the record, University of Oregon left offensive tackle Bo Thran is believed to be the first Baseball Northwest alumni to play in the college football national title game. He is likely the biggest alumni also at 6’5” and 286 lbs.

Speaking of college football—have to mention the successful year of Univ. of Washington quarterback Jake Locker—one of the all-time favorite Baseball Northwest alumni in terms of “good kid” and class act playing in the 2006 Northwest Championships.  Good luck in the NFL Jake.

Two more alumni made pre-season college All-American teams.  Collegiate Baseball named RHP Chris Dennis from the Univ. of Portland to their second team, and LHP Mitchell Lambson of Arizona State to their 3rd team.

Baseball America’s top 100 2011 junior college prospect list included four e-Baseball Northwest players—Jeff Ames, right handed pitcher from Lower Columbia CC at #10, right handed pitcher Adrian Sampson from Bellevue CC at #45,  right handed pitcher Cody Hebner from Green River CC at #92 and outfielder Tym Pearson from Lane CC at #99.

Good to see Boston Red Sox LHP and Baseball Northwest alumni Jon Lester from Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma finish fourth in last season’s American League Cy Young Award voting. His recovery from cancer is a remarkable story. He is the second alum to receive votes for a CY Young Award. Of course, alum Tim Lincecum has won the award twice. Both pitchers pitched in the Northwest Championship Tournament.
