NORTHWEST PLAYER SCOUTING REPORTS

 

1.         Andrew Kittredge       RHP    6Õ2  190           R/R                  Ferris HS                    Spokane, Wa.

            Power live arm.  Over 90 at times. Very strong and athletic frame. Very poised and competitive.

Aggressive with up tempo delivery.  Good feel for change up. CB is improving. Command of three pitches. Ability to make pitches.  East Washington Prospect Game participant and opened a lot of eyes at the World Wood Bat Championships in Florida late in the fall.  Should make a quick impact at the next level. Committed to Univ. of Washington

 

2.         Trevor May                 RHP    6Õ5  210           R/R                  Kelso HS                    Kelso, Wa.

            Big body, large frame with even more to come.  Long, loose arm action. Has been 92 at times on

the gun. Good spin to CBÉwill likely develop to power type. Very projectable in all areas. Needs to refine delivery for consistent command. Big upside. Made a big impression at the Southwest Washington Prospect Games and moved up the list with strong fall outings on North Oregon/SW Washington Fall Scout team. Signed with Univ. of Washington.

 

3.         Ryan Gorton               C/RHP            6Õ2  185           R/R                  Tigard HS                   Tigard, Or.

Likely the best pure athlete of the group.  One of the best three sport athletes in the northwest. For sure rare two way type guy at next level.  Some think he will be a closer at the next level and others think he will be a All-American as a catcher.  And even some think he may end up in right-field.  Shows a fast, easy arm action on the mound with plus 90 velo at times. Very projectable in this area. Is just learning to catch and is a natural leader. Needs to improve offensive approach.  Former Oregon junior fall scout team member and two year Northwest Championship All-Tournament team selection.  Signed with Oregon State.

 

4.         Darrell Hunter             INF     6Õ3  185           R/R                  Thurston HS               Springfield,Or

Projection power potential.  Very good physical frame to grow into. Has what scouts call ÒeasyÓ power. Ball jumps off his bat. Has a lot of adjustment to make with offensive approach but with big upside. Likely to begin in the infield at the next level but projects to the outfield with plus outfield instincts and abilities. Played very well there on the Oregon junior fall Scout team last fall. Likely eventually outgrow the infield. Broke his thumb in the Northwest Championship Tournament and missed this fall. Has strong arm and may even pitch some at the next level. Goes down in history as the first committed player to the new Univ. of Oregon baseball program.

 

5.         Bryan Peterson            OF       6Õ2  200           L/R                  West Valley HS          Spokane, Wa.

Big upside with the bat.  Very athletic player with plus body strength.  Has much sought after left-handed power at the plate. Learning to make adjustments in his swing to use power more. Runs and throws well. Very good work ethic. Continues to improve. Likes to play. College football quarterback prospect also. Good game performer at the East Washington Prospect Games and Northwest Championship Tournament. Signed with Washington State.

 

6.         Beau Brett                   1B       6Õ4  190           L/L                  Ferris HS                    Spokane, Wa.

Another left-handed power bat potential. Can project on his power developing by use of natural offensive approach. Good gene pool. Nephew of Hall of Famer George Brett. Another quality three sport athlete. Plus physical frame to develop. Good actions in everything he does. Solid instincts for the game. An athlete who can make adjustments. Another one who will develop quickly by concentrating on just one sport after high school. Returned to southern California roots by signing with University of Southern California.

 

7.         Colby Sokol                OF       6Õ2 185            L/L                  Emerald Ridge HS      Puyuallp,Wa.  

Yes, even another left-handed power bat upside. Need to improve contact at the plate for big upside with power. Can stay in centerfield at the next level. Can run and throw well. Good approach to the game. Has a passion for the game. Missed a lot of last two years with injuries. Is catching up in development process. A Northwest Championship All-Star (hit three homeruns) and also homered at the World Wood Bat Championships for Baseball Northwest. Signed with the Univ. of Oregon.

 

8.         Jordan Bayliss             RHP/OF 6Õ4  210       R/R                  David Douglas HS      Portland, Or.

Power live arm. Up to 90 velocity at times with more to likely come. Crude and underdeveloped in all areas of baseball but upside. Very athletic with strong frame. Shows strong potential with CB. Could also play in outfield in college depending on what level he plays at.  Has not decided to date on where he will attend college.  Is a college basketball prospect also and will do both where he decides to go to college.

 

9.         Doug Joyce                 C         6Õ3  200           R/R                  Stanwood HS              Stanwood, Wa.

Good tools to develop to offensive catcher. Strong arm with well developed frame. Sound release. Hands and actions are playable but will need refinement in this area. Good strength in swing. Shows power now when he pulls ball. Is impressive physically. Needs to take the game more seriously to develop. It is tough to find catchers that can contribute both offensively and defensively at the next level. He has the tools to do that.  Separated himself out at the Northwest Washington Prospect Games. Signed with Florida International Univ.

 

10.       Blake Gibbs                C         6Õ1  210           R/R                  Newport HS                Bellevue, Wa.

Upside offensively. As good approach offensively as in this class.  Uses the whole field well and understands how to use the lower half in hitting. Develops good consistent bat path to the ball. Aggressive swing.  Has ability to make adjustments. Natural instincts to hit. Likes to play. Plays with energy. Surprising athleticism.  Needs work in all areas to contribute catching at the next level and could likely end up in leftfield. Baseball strength to body. A Northwest Championship Tournament All-Star.  Will be attending Oregon State.

 

11.       Michael Wesner          1B       6Õ3  205           L/L                  Lake Oswego HS     Lake Oswego, Or.

Jumped on the radar screen late with showing at Northwest Championships. Very good athlete with size and strength.  Made good contact at the plate with sound offensive approach.  Uses all the field with controlled easy swing. Will need to learn to develop power.  Will likely be a plus defender at the next level. Was named Most Valuable Player for the winning Oregon Metro team at the Northwest Championships. Signed with Oregon State.

 

12.       Kevin Komstadius      1B/OF  6Õ4  200          L/L                  East Valley HS       Yakima, Wa.       

Yet, even another left-handed power bat potential from this class. Made huge impression at the Northwest Championships with offensive approach and his approach to the game. Plays hard with passion to improve. Good strength to swing. Very physical approach to game. Shows baseball instincts in all areas. Athletic enough to move to outfield if needed. Good leader. 13.       Rusty Shellhorn          LHP    5Õ10  160         L/L                  Central Valley HS       Spokane, Wa.

Crafty lefthander who can pitch.  Game performer. Does not have overpowering type stuff but shows good command and deception which should allow him to compete for innings early in college career.  Uses both sides of the plate with above average movement to his fastball.  Will need to gain strength continue development of secondary pitches for next level. Showed he could beat quality hitters during the East Washington Fall Scout team schedule and the Arizona Senior Fall Classic. Signed with Washington State

 

14.       Jared Cunningham      INF     6Õ1  175           R/R                  Mt. Spokane HS         Spokane, Wa.

Good over tools. Likely to stay in the infield at next level but 2B or 3B more likely. Arm is his best defensive asset but tends to stay back on ground balls and relies on his arm. Has some ÒpopÓ and swing is improving as he learns to use all the field.  Knee injury in the fall may limit his development this spring. Has ability to excel at next level with improved work ethic. Performed well in many Baseball Northwest events including the 2006 Washington Junior Olympic Tournament Team. Signed with Arizona State.

 

15.       Seth Haehl                   RHP    6Õ2  190           R/R                  Eastmont HS               Eastmont, Wa.

Athletic, big frame and good arm strength.  Can show 90 on the gun at times with riding life. Will need to develop better consistency of secondary pitches for next level. Signed with Shows a good arm action for development. Will need to refine mechanics to gain consistency of stuff. Univ. of Washington.

 

16.       Brandon Rhode           LHP    6Õ4  190           L/L                  Gig Harbor HS           Gig Harbor, Wa.

Coming of left-elbow surgery and missed all of 2007. In the last couple of yearÕs previously in Baseball Northwest events showed good projection as left-handed pitcher. Easy, full arm action with strength and life.  Plus spin to breaking ball. Good projection to tall, loose frame.  Potential to be as good as anyone on this list. Showed ability to pitch as an underclassmen. A Northwest Championships All-Star. Signed with Univ. of Washington.

 

17.       Danny Oh                   OF       6Õ0  180           L/L                  Jackson HS                 Mill Creek, Wa.

Ranked #1 in last yearÕs class of 2008 rankings. Continues to shows ability to make adjustment at the plate. Has balanced, easy approach to swing. Will use all the field effectively. Should hit at next level.  Power has not developed. Has not gotten much stronger and lost a step of speed since last year which may end him up in leftfield in college. Has the ability to raise his game if he would work at it. Signed with Univ. of California.

 

18.       Beau Didier                 INF     6Õ1  190           L/R                  Bellarmine Prep           Tacoma, Wa.

Has ability to develop as a hitter. Likes to hit. Has good recognition skills at the plate. Needs to use lower half in swing for continued development. Shows good instincts for game but must find defensive position in college.  Corner infield or possibility of catching mostly likely. Has ability to throw. Signed with Louisiana State.

 

19.       Collin Bennett             OF       6Õ2  175           R/R                  Newport HS    Bellevue, Wa.

Some upside because of athleticism. Strength and speed. Good run and throw tools. Good body control. Some crudeness in all areas of the game. Enough instincts to stay in centerfield. It is all there to develop.  Has strength and quickness to swing but must improve offensive approach.

 

            20.       Rusty Devitt                RHP    6Õ2  185           R/R                  Klahowya HS Bremerton, Wa

Excelled well and jumped on the radar screen with scouts on the West Washington Fall Scout Team and at the Arizona Senior Fall Classic. Quality arm strength—up to 90 at times and ability to make pitches with fastball.  Good definition to CB—chance to develop to strikeout pitch at next level. Strong frame. Tends to be to mechanical in delivery but ball jumps out of his hand. A sleeper.

 

21.       Kyle Buchanan            C         6Õ2  210           R/R                  Auburn HS     Auburn, Wa.

Power bat. Strong and mature frame. Power is to pull now but has ability to hit the ball out of the ball park in any part of field with adjustments. Hands are playable behind the plate but must improve mobility and release to stay there. Could easily end up at 1B. Was a member of the USA Baseball National Team 18-under team this past summer.  Signed with Washington State

 

22.       Jay Skilton                  INF     6Õ0  170           R/R                  Stadium HS     Tacoma, Wa.

Very athletic. Runs very well and has good instincts in all areas of the game. Has potential with the bat but need to improve offensive approach to use ability.  to end up in the outfield at the next level to use speed. Some stiffness to overall infield actions.  Good game performer at the Northwest Championships a year ago but needs to challenge himself consistently against better competition for development.

 

23.       Jeremy Gendlek          RHP    6Õ1  195           R/R                  Olympia HS    Olympia, Wa.

Strong body and live arm and strength. Shows flashes of tight breaking ball.  Deceptive delivery. Needs to work fast and challenge hitters.  Shows tough low ¾ angle to hitters.

Solid stuff. Will need to learn to use stuff and gain command of strike zone.

 

24.       Jacob Theis                 RHP    6Õ6  210           R/R                  Mount Lake Terr. HS Brier, Wa.

Tall, rangy frame with good projection. Sinking type fastball with more velocity to come (86-88 now). Shows hard sweeping type breaking ball. Has ability and will challenge hitters. Gaining more consistency in delivery will help. Fair arm action and delivery. Shows consistency of results in Prospect Games and Northwest Championships. Signed with Washington State

 

25.       Jacob Shadle               RHP    6Õ3  175           R/R                  Graham Kap. HS Graham, Wa.

Full, loose and fast arm action. Good projection to arm action and frame. Shows good spin to breaking ball. Could make a jump in velocity this spring. Needs to get stronger and gain command of pitches. Is underdeveloped in a lot of areas. Showed potential as member of the BBNW Washington 2006 USA Baseball Junior Olympic Tournament team.

 

26.       Corey Davis                C         6Õ0  175           L/R                  Clackamas HS Clackamas, Wa.

Just converted to catcher this summer.  Has made good strides doing that.  Good athlete. Good catcherÕs frame. Shows easy release with enough arm strength. Solid hands with loose flexible frame. Smart and competitive.  Has offensive upside. Easy, balanced stroke from left-side. Will use all field. Makes adjustments well. Must become stronger. A sleeper. Showed good development on Oregon Senior Fall Scout Team.

 

27.       Derek Jones    OF/LHP          5Õ11 190          L/L                  Snohomish HS Snohomish, Wa.

Potential two way player at next level Shows good feel for three pitches with command from left-side.  Not over powering with fastball but uses both sides of plate and keeps the ball down. Another left-handed power threat at the plate. Must improve contact to use that power.  Mobile enough for right-field in college. Strong athlete that needs to become more aggressive. Signed with Washington State.

 

28.       Andy Bethel                INF     5Õ11 165          R/R                  Seattle Prep     Seattle, Wa.

Good infield actions. Soft hands and enough arm to stay at shortstop in college.  Defensive instincts. Shows fair range but needs to be more aggressive on ground balls. Can turn the double play. Will put the ball in play ok at the plate but needs to learn to drive the ball. Is a below average runner for middle infield prospect. Signed with Univ. of Washington.

 

29.       Kevin Meyers             INF     6Õ1  170           R/R                  Stadium HS     Tacoma, Wa.

Good tools. Upside. Skill level has not caught up to physical ability. Good arm strength form left side of infield. Hands and actions are playable.  Needs development on reading and routes to ground balls. Shows good ÒpopÓ in bat but must improve pitch recognition and contact. Showed overall ability with the BBNW team at the World Wood Bat Championships. Work ethic must improve to reach potential.

 

30.       Garrett Totten              INF     5Õ10  170         R/R                  Kings HS        Brier, Wa.

Good player. Not flashy but solid in all parts of the game. Makes plays and makes a team better. No real pluses but does everything well enough. Likely end up at second or third base in college. A gamer. Gets a lot out of ability. Shows good offensive approach. Makes adjustments and will get on base. Likes to play and really grows on you the more you see him. Signed with Texas Tech.

 

31.       Tyler Olson                 LHP    6Õ3  180           R/L                  University HS Spokane, Wa.

Jumped back on the northwest radar screen with college coaches playing on the East Washington Fall Scout team and in the Arizona Senior Fall Classic.  Moved back to the Washington from California late in summer. Good athlete. Fastball has mid 80Õs velocity but late heavy movement.  Breaking ball has late action with potential power. Shows repeatable delivery with good arm action. Very good competitor. Is aggressive and keeps coming at you. Just need innings for development.  A sleeper. Signed with Gonzaga Univ.

 

32.       Anthony Drobnick      RHP    6Õ3  210           R/R                  Seattle Prep     Seattle, Wa.

Another projectable right-handed pitcher. Good frame that should get stronger. Solid arm action and arm strength. Also has depth to breaking ball at times. Will need to establish consistent arm slot to keep the ball down and challenge hitters more. Signed with Washington State.

 

33.       Jesse Dodd                  C         6Õ3  195           R/R                  Eagle HS         Eagle, Id.

            Ranked as the #1 Idaho/Montana/Wyoming player in this class because of offensive upside

with power to go with it. Missed a lot of summer and fall time recovering from broken bone is his foot. Big and strong body with more to come. Performed very well in the fall at the Arizona Fall Classic and World Wood Bat Championships despite still rehabbing foot.  Shows good natural bat path and make good adjustments with ability to drive the ball to all fields. Has arm strength behind the plate but must improve glove position and mobility to catch at the next level. Some see him ending up at 1B.

 

34.       David Olson                RHP/1B          6Õ3  215           R/R      Auburn HS     Auburn, Wa.

Possible two way player at next level. But will likely have to decide which to do to maximize effectiveness with one. Has strong mature frame. Knows how to pitch and uses all his pitches well. May take more velocity development for success at next level. Shows power at the plate with some potential for adjustment with approach at the next level. Signed with Washington State.

 

35.       Brady McGwire          C                     6Õ0  195           R/R      Kentridge HS  Kent, Wa.

Posses strong catch and throw ability. Could be ready quickly to compete for starting job at the D1 level because of defense. Has the ability to get rid of the ball with accuracy and carry in all areas of the strike zone. Has the required ÒsoftnessÓ to hands and receiving actions. His offense lags far behind the defense. Must learn to use his body to develop quickness to his swing. Swing is dominated only with the top half now. Signed with Univ. of Washington.

 

            36.       Kevin Whitehead         C         6Õ2  205           L/R      Franklin Pierce HS      Tacoma, Wa.

Good left-handed approach to hitting.  Strong catching frame. Controlled quick swing with ability for adjustment. Shows ability to square up barrel on different pitches. Will need to learn to release body to develop power. Improvement must come in receiving skills and throwing footwork to catch everyday at the next level. May end up at 1B.  A gamer. 37.       J.D. Awald                  LHP    6Õ3  180           L/L      Cedar Park Christian   Duvall, Wa.    

Proven winner. Projectable frame and actions. Life to arm. Needs strength development. Has good spin the breaking ball.  Likely to contribute quickly with strength development but has limited experience. Signed with Univ. of Washington.

 

38.       Alex Keudell               RHP    6Õ3  190           R/R                  Jesuit HS         Portland, Or.

Showed continued development in the fall with the Oregon fall scout team and made strong showing at the Arizona Fall Classic.  Fastball velocity is improving to up to 88 at times.  Curveball is his out pitch and is gaining command of it each time out. Developing a third pitch and improve command inside the strike zone will be key for next level. Not blessed with an easy arm action for projection. Signed with the Univ. of Oregon.

 

39.       Mitchell Lambson       LHP    6Õ1  175           L/L                  Tualatin HS     Tualatin, Or.   

Plus ability to pitch. Plus late life to fastball and can use both sides of the plate with it. Good deception to a delivery with below average mechanics but the ability to repeat it. Will need to make adjustments to pitch sequence because of limited velocity for success at the next level. Has the pitches to do it. He wants the ball and will take the challenge. Was the Most Valuable Pitcher for the Oregon Metro team that won the Northwest Championships. Signed with Arizona State Univ.

 

40.       Cameron Love             RHP    6Õ1  170           R/R                  Jesuit HS         Portland, Or.

Good upside. Has very long, full, clean and easy arm action.  . Good frame for projection. Shows feel for three pitches with life to arm to fastball. Has not made a jump in velocity but likely will soon with much needed strength and maturity physically. Has feel for strike zone and will compete. Shows plus athleticism and good mound presence. 41.       Doug Kincaid              OF       6Õ0  200           L/L                  Jesuit HS         Portland, Or.

Upside offensively. Another left-handed power potential candidate in this class. Can generate bat speed. Adjustments are coming slowly but likely worth the wait. Shows ÒpullÓ type power now but must make adjustment to use the whole field better. Is over-aggressive at times in certain parts of the strike zone early in the count.  Must improve discipline to develop outfield defense. May be limited to left-field. Must channel emotions to turn ability into results. Signed with Oregon State.

 

            42.       Spencer Payne             3B       6Õ0  190           R/R      Eastside Catholic HS   Kirkland, Wa.

Overall ability. Live, athletic frame. Very usable actions in all phases of the game. No real pluses to tools but ability. Has ÒlifeÓ to bat but must develop improved swing path and recognition for adjustment for next level to hit.  Has enough raw power to stay at corner infield position. Defensive actions and instincts are playable. He likes to play. With the right kind of development it could come quickly.

 

43.       Cody Ryckman                       C                     White River HS                       Buckley, Wa.

Has catch and throw ability for the next level. Shows very true arm with accuracy and carry.  Has some length to release from long rangy frame.  Solid hands for receiving, and flexibility to lower half for shifting. Must gain body strength for improvement in all phases of his game. Bat will need developing for everyday job at next level. Must use his body better in development quickness to his swing. Needs to show the desire to improve.

 

            44.       T.J. Parthermer            LHP    6Õ2  180           L/L      Eastside Catholic HS   Issaquah, Wa.

Projectable lefthander from a good frame with long easy arm action. Shows ability to spin the breaking ball well for development of it. Solid pitching actions. Must get stronger for increase in velocity and development an off-speed pitch. Is poised and competes.  Signed with Univ. of Washington.

 

45.       Zane Norris                 OF       6Õ3  205           R/L                  Jesuit HS         Portland, Or.

Posses speed, power, and athleticism. Must bring skill level up to ÒtoolÓ level. A top SPARQ rating score. The adjustments in his swing are improving to increase contact in all areas of the strike zone to use plus power. Plays with intent. Throws and shows enough instincts for right field at next level. Unique bats right but throws left. A sleeper.

 

            46.       Matt Gorman               RHP    6Õ1  200           R/R                  Meadowdale HSLynnwood, Wa.

Strong and athletic. Some upside. Has not pitched as much as most on the list. Good multi-sport athlete that could blossom quickly concentrating only on pitching. Fast arm with near 90 mph arm strength at times. Will need refining delivery for consistency of command. With stuff and delivery—may end up in the bullpen at next level. Strong and competitive.  Repeatable delivery. Fastball is up to 87.Likely able to compete quickly at next level. Throws strikes and will challenge hitters down in the strike zone with fastball. Limited upside to stuff but knows how to pitch. Must learn to use secondary stuff better and more often for success at next level. Signed with the Univ. of  Portland.

            Loose and projectable frame and actions.  Will need to pickup velocity but should come

            with additional weight gain.  Fast arm. Has feel for strike zone. Good angle to plate.

            Aggressive approach. Has some upside with natural development.

 

49.       Kyle Long                   RHP    6Õ0  160           R/R                  Eds-Woodway            Lynwood, Wa.

Compact, quick arm with strength.  Some effort to delivery but repeats adequately. Throws everything hard now and will need to learn to change speeds. Breaking ball has potential.  Will need to be more aggressive inside the strike zone for next level success. Will need to add strength to medium frame for it upside.

 

            50.       Kramer Scott               1B       6Õ0  175           L/L                  Eds-Woodway            Lynnwood, Wa.

Good actions and instincts for development. Classic line drive stroke and can use all the field.
